USS Norfolk, United States of America
There have been three American naval vessels named Norfolk.
The brig Norfolk (1798-1800), was built by the city of Norfolk VA for public service at the beginning of the Quasi-War with France in 1798, and saw service in the West Indies.
The second vessel, USS Norfolk, was a 8135 ton destroyer, the first of a new class, commissioned in 1953.
Unfortunately, the class proved too costly to produce in large numbers and was canceled, so the Norfolk spent her entire career as a test and trials ship.
She was decommissioned in 1973, sold, and broken up for scrap.
The current USS Norfolk is a Nuclear powered Submarine with a compliment of 12 Officers and 98 Enlisted men.
We invited the USS Norfolk to the first gathering of the Norfolk & Norwich World Family in 1996, and received a most polite reply... "Regretting our inability to be present as we should be under the Antarctic ice at the time!".
