The story of North Norwich.
from the book 'Next Stop Galena' by Janet Decker.
North Norwich is located in Chenango County in central New York State. Our roots go back to 1792 when hardy pioneers braved the unbroken forest to seek homes in the 'west'. Many of our pioneer ancestors moved to North Norwich from Amenia, Dutchess County, New York. Their ancestors had arrived in America earlier, landing in Connecticut. Descendants of several of the original settlers are still living in the town.

North Norwich is a quaint, small village with several old houses in the town that date back to the early 1800s.
The town itself contains productive farms on scenic country roads, with some farms being kept in the same families for generations. Within the boundaries of the Town of North Norwich are the hamlets of Plasterville, King's Settlement and Sherburne Four Corners.
Left: 150 year-old Methodist Church.
Right: The Chenango Canal - one of the great communication ways.
Amongst the many transportations along this canal was that of the 114th Regiment southwards to The Civil War and at conclusion of that war they were brought home, those that survived. It was ironic that it was The Chenango Canal that brought the first railway engine to the valley and thus brought about its own demise.
From the first railway service via The Albany and Susquehanna company (1851) to the Conrail consolidation in 1970, the railway was the lifeline to The Chenango Valley. But the line was finally sold in 1982.
