Norwich Township, Missaukee County, Michigan

Administration: Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer and two Trustees.
(The township hall is in Moorestown).
Population: 650
Area: 72 square miles

Norwich Township is located in the north-eastern corner of Missaukee County. The county was named after a prominent Indian Chief, Nesaukee, which means: 'Large Mouth of the River'.

This remote township is one of the few remaining double-sized townships in Michigan, spanning 6 by 12 miles. The eastern half is located in the Missaukee State Forest and contains several streams and creeks that form the Dead Stream Swamp. Oil also has been found here, and many wells dot the landscape.

The small community of Moorestown is known for having an airport and is a popular place in the summer months for fly-ins with those who have small aircrafts.

We have the pleasure of three writings from pupils at Lake City High School, Missaukee....

Angie Klein. Lake City High School, 10th grade, 16 years old.
"I've lived in Norwich Township my whole life. I live in a safe community. You can trust just about everyone. It's nice because you can walk down the road and wave at someone and know at least their names. You are friends with their kids and your parents are friends with the kids parents."

Quinn Vokes, Lake City High School, 10th Grade, 15 years old.
"Sunny day in the Church yard, swinging back and forth, being called in for cookies, greeted by an angel's face and a warm smile. She tells us a simple bible story and we listen intently. Lesson is over. We skip down the dirt road home singing 'Jesus Loves Me'."

Erin Milne, Lake City High School, 12th Grade, 18 years.
"To live in Norwich Township is to have a real sense of community. I have had the sort of childhood that is difficult to come by these days. My old friends live within biking distance. I know each one of my neighbors. The saying about it taking a whole village to raise a child is true here. I don't feel I have missed out on anything having grown up in a small town."

And Lois Milne (Clerk of Norwich Township) remarks -
"This is Easter Time with spring around the corner. I remember Easter baskets consisting of pickled eggs and one toy and maybe if we were lucky a chocolate. I am attempting to send something of a surprise to my daughter in Italy . It would be her first Easter without the Easter colouring of eggs and hunting for Easter eggs with her basket."

The history of Moorestown by Fred C. Hirzel on the internet is fascinating and the building of that community from the raw beginnings is there to be understood.

We have found reference to a Norwich village in neighboring Pioneer Township, but have no more information as yet.
