Background to City of Norwich, NY
Excerpts from contribution of Kathryn L.Barton, Historian

Norwich is located in Central New York State in the County of Chenango and is the main County City. The Name of Chenango means land of the Bull Thistle (the County flower).
Norwich is named after that USA original Norwich, Connecticut, an influence of so many of the nation's other Norwich. There is thence a direct connection with Norwich England and 'Nor'wich' is the usual pronunciation.

Norwich was settled in 1788 by one Avery Powers and finally became a city in 1914 - since when there have been 18 Mayors with the first lady Mayor being Marjorie Chomyszak in her repeated two year terms of 1990 to 1994.

Extensive canals, main railway junctions and finally an airport have all emphasised the city's importance. Business has ranged from the basic necessities to large pharmaceutical connections. Nothing is permanent in these aspects and there have been catastrophic changes from time to time.
The schools, churches, libraries, museums and associations in Norwich are thriving as is the very energetic chamber of commerce.
Norwich's attractive tree lined streets have many imposing houses of varying architecture.
There are many days in the year for citizens to celebrate particular aspects.
