Location: 36º51´50"N 76º20´59"W
West Norfolk lies across the river from the city of Norfolk VA.
By the 1890's, West Norfolk was a developing community. It has been described as the place where sail met rail. Once a thriving community with hotels, restaurants and train stations, it has declined over the years, and in 1895 incorporated into the town of Portsmouth.
Today, it is a small community of about 200 homes, an industrial plant and two churches.
The West Norfolk Baptist Church can trace its beginnings back to 1891, when the Reverend A B Dunaway, pastor of Churchland Baptist, held services for the community of West Norfolk in a building on the waterfront. The church still in use today was built in 1900.
