Norfolk State College was founded in 1935. The College, brought to life in the midst of the Great Depression, provided a setting in which the youth of the region could give expressions to their hopes and aspirations.


Today, the University is proud to be one of the largest predominantly black institutions in the nation. Furthermore, it is committed to pursuing its vital role of serving the people of the Hampton Roads area.




Norfolk State University offers a remarkable balance between quality and cost. Students are able to receive the utmost in academic excellence without the worry of tuition being overpriced. Students find that NSU is worth the time, money, and effort. After all, college education is a big investment and NSU is definitely a great buy!

The University houses a fabulous and unique facility - The Lois E. Woods Museum - the gallery of which houses an extensive African Art collection within its' ten thousand square foot exhibit space, which represents forty-six tribes within fourteen African countries.
