Norwich & Norwich Halt, Surrey County, Jamaica
Jamaica is, in our search for Norwich and Norfolk's, still unexplored territory. Internet searches have provided only limited information. However, we were able to make contact with Elva McLean, principal of the Norwich Primary School in Norwich, Surrey County, who has become one of the unique school tutors to have supplied these interesting outlines. Derek Bickford-Smith
Norwich District is in the Parish of Portland and the Eastern County of Surrey. The name derives from Lord Norwich whose land it was and is some two miles West from Port Antonio. It's a rural community whose farm products are fruits of every kind and whose overall Parish is the most famous in the world for its Breadfruits. The first Banana boat of The United Fruit Company docked in Port Antonio and this property adjacent to Norwich Primary school still has a reminder of the days of the sugar plantations via the copper sugar pots in which sugar was boiled.
Norwich is a sea front community with some of those famously beautiful Jamaican beaches.
The Norwich community is divided into two with Norwich Halt being the bottom portion which includes the beaches. Norwich School and Norwich Guest House are in the top Norwich. Some of the roads are asphalted while others are partially rough, strong and bad.
Water is supplied by pipes via a dam/reservoir while there are rivers supplying water for domestic use.
Electricity is a 95% resource and there are many clubs and associations, with a particularly strong Youth and Community club - currently The Football Champions!
Whilst telephone services are throughout, the use of computer and fax facilities are yet in small supply.
