Norwich, St Ann Parish, Middlesex County, Jamaica

Location: 18º21´N 77º25´W

Our thanks to Erica & Michael Salt for their research in Jamaica and for sending the following...

We spent a day making an expedition to the Norwich in St Ann. It was quite a journey! Once you get off the main roads and then English country-like lanes, one has to rely on asking people the way since there are no sign posts, and the lanes quickly become like dried up river beds.
Eventually however (after 3 1/2 hours - including crossing a bauxite mining operation) we found our way to the place of the map called Norwich, only to find that none of the locals (some quite old) recognised the name. As far as they were concerned the place was called Endeavour. It looks as though that tract of land that bore the Norwich name was subsumed into a larger holding, probably before the second world war.

The photographs are of the church and ruined school hall, both of which date from 1929 - though they look much older. The whole place looks like a different world, and clearly the occupants felt passed by and cut adrift. The only local memories we could find were cut into the gravestones, some quite elaborate.
