Area: 2050 square miles.
The county is thought of by many as being flat because there are no hills of any consequence, but minor hills and valleys abound in a gently rolling landscape.
There are, of course, areas that are completely flat. In the west, below The Wash, is a vast area known as The Fens. Countless dykes and ditches dug over the centuries and a massive pumping station have now drained the land. And in the east, the rivers now meander through the remains of once vast estuaries that lead to the sea. Around the coastline the landscape is continually changing as the soft cliffs are eroded by wind and tide. Countless houses and even whole villages and towns have disappeared beneath the waves over the centuries.
So Norfolk is a county of contrasting landscapes from the fens in the west, across the downs of the north, the wetlands in the east, and the heathland of the south. And everywhere, towns and villages with over a thousand years of history.
Norfolk and its neighbour, Suffolk (the lands of the North Folk and South Folk), form the original East Anglia - land of the Angles - and before the Angles, the land of Boudicca and the Icene. An area steeped in history.
By the time the Normans invaded in 1066, Norfolk was one of the most populated counties in England - for the Domesday Book, Norfolk required two books! It was a prosperous farming county, and it has remained such.
Farming methods of times past are still remembered at a number of country shows around the county in the summer months..

The county is sub-divided into 6 areas plus the City of Norwich. Each of these administrative districts have their own distinct identity, and a recorded here on separate pages...
