Norwich the Old City The Old Skating Rink Page 2

Well, I said you were in for a surprise. Not only a historic building, but also an Aladdin's Cave of Eastern objects.

Today, rugs hang over the balconies that the audiences looked over in amazement at those trying this new-fangled craze.

The paint work on the roof and arches has gone - they were originally distempered French Grey with the arches highlighted with broad bands of red and blue. And the statues and shields that adorned the brick walls have gone.
But the elegance of the roof design must be admired.

At the western end of the building, the musician's gallery has gone along wth it's organ and automatic piano. Today there is a splendid balcony from the far east.

If you wondering about these massive balconies, they have been saved from old houses that were being destroyed.
What a shame our past and present local officials didn't do more of the same......

And that ends our visit to where East meets West.
Now let's have a good look around this collection and maybe pick up a gift.

One final comment. The rink was designed by Horace Lacey, and built by J.W. Lacey. Were they then to become part of Lacey & Lincoln, the builders merchants?
Perhaps someone can fill in the details there.....

My thanks to George Plunkett for allowing the use of his photograph,
and to Jeannie & Philip Millward for allowing me to take photographs.
