Norwich the Old City The Curat House Page 3

Keeping up with the rest of the group on this visit made it difficult to work out where we were and what was part of the original building and what had been added or changed in the past 5 centuries. But eventually, we made our way along a modern lean-to passage to what was the family chapel...

The barrel-vaulted ceiling gave it a 'chapel-look', but I would imagine it has been altered over time. At one end a small bay window. On the side a large doorway leads to the rest of the house

At the Haymarket end of the chapel there is a fireplace with an impressive coat of arms above it, and next to it a small arched doorway that leads to the rooms overlooking the Haymarket.

The larger room has a fireplace where you could just see (through the metal fittings that had been stacked in it) some original Delf tiles.

The small room at the other end had an impressive wood fire surround with family portraits carved on the panels. Is this the original Curat family?

OK, back through the chapel and into the room on the left........

Whenever you are walking around Norwich (or any town centre), remember to look above the modern shop fronts. You never know what fine old building might still be seen.
