The cellars are extensive (as they were in many of the old buildings in this part of Norwich), but we only saw a small part of them.
In the passage way there were recesses in the wall, this one with lettering above which was difficult to make out.
The passageway led to a groined cellar

At the front (Haymarket) end of this cellar was another one that ran parallel to the street. This had a carved oak door frame with the date 1501 on one side and the Curat logo on the other.
The cellars are thought to pre-date the Curat House and be part of the original Jewish buildings that occupied this area after the Norman conquest. There is a 50 ft deep well that was capped in the 1800's.
It was in these cellars that the Back family stored and bottle their wines, and for a while they even bottled Guinness.
Back up the stairs and even more stairs and passageways to the first floor.....
