East Anglia, Land of the Iceni East Anglia in book and film

David Copperfield
BBC-WGBH Boston co-production - 1999
Director: Simon Curtis
Screenplay: Adrian Hodges

Cast: Bob Hoskins, Michael Elphick, Pauline Quirke, Maggie Smith, Trevor Eve, Nicholas Lyndhurst, Emilia Fox, Daniel Radcliffe, Ciaran McMenamin

The cast list of this 1999 production reads like a who's who of British acting talent, from the long established Maggie Smith and Bob Hoskins, through a list of names familiar to British TV audiences, to the newish names of Emilia Fox (daughter of actor Edward Fox) and the young Daniel Radcliffe who went on to enjoy fame as 'Harry Potter'.

This is a well paced production that takes us from David's childhood with his mother and their devoted servant Peggotty, through the arrival of the sadistic father, his rescue by eccentric Aunt - Betsy Trotwood, and through the ups and downs as he reaches maturity.

The location chosen for Peggotty's Houseboat was the same stretch of beach at Benacre, north of Southwold in Suffok, that was used in the 1970 20th Century Fox film. The great storm scene was also shot at Benacre with the help wind and rain machines.
Interiors of the debtor's prison were shot in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.

The beach at Benacre could soon be lost to the sea if current predictions of rising sea levels due to global warming come true.
